Natural Child Photo Tips #1

Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year!

This is the first installment of my Natural Child Photo Tips. Every month (or as the mood strikes me), I'll be sending you little tidbits, tips, earth-shattering, imperative information and stories about how to get great shots of your kids.

Getting the great unposed shot - an ongoing quest

Posed pictures definitely have their place. But capturing snippets out of your child's everyday life can be really special.   It helps if you get them used to you having your camera around a lot. Keep it accessible in the house. Grab it when nothing special is happening, and just take a few shots.

Some mornings, I bring my camera to the breakfast table, just to capture the essence of a typical day. I open the curtains wide, for more light, so I don't need a flash. If your light is low, bump up your ISO to 800 or higher. Breakfast, drawing, leaving for school . . . all ordinary, and extraordinary.

After a short while, you keep clicking and they ignore you, out of boredom. Get them out of the habit of looking at you and smiling!   Don't make them look cute! It will pay off, handsomely, by the natural shots you get. You can always call their name for a shot and get them to look at you - just don't do it a lot. They will naturally engage you periodically, on their own.

Follow your children - they will lead you to places you never knew you wanted to go.

Feel free to email with any photo questions!

All my best,

Kelly
